The earliest civilisation in ancient Greece, the Minoan, was founded on the large island of Crete. This civilisation was based around several large palaces which housed the rulers, upper class, administration and tradesmen of the Minoans. The largest palace in Minoan Crete was at Knossos.
The Minoans were a trading people connecting mainland Greece with the Cyclades, the Near East and Ancient Egypt. The Minoans had a rich culture. The Minoans had a distinct religious culture, the bull was an important symbol.
